Paramo Frame Description

Going beyond the limits. Above the tree line and below the snow line, life forms face extreme conditions, but it’s within this zone in the towering Andes that one can find the Páramo. A place where nature evolves at one of the fastest rates on Earth, a place of staggering diversity and stark, barren beauty. Coincidentally, it’s a place where few venture, perhaps because of the thinness of the air and absence of paved roads. Fifty percent of the world’s páramos are in Colombia. Inspired by a place where we tread lightly, appreciate greatly, and marvel at one of our most beloved places in Colombia, we’ve named our gravel bike after it: Paramo.

In a country where an estimated 10% of the roads are paved, the Paramo was born out of necessity rather than fashion. Giving the ability to navigate Colombia’s challenging terrain away from the pavement and with added comfort was the Scarab Paramo’s mission. Little did we know that once built, it would take us to places of immense beauty, away from traffic only to leave us wanting more? We created a monster.

Why Steel

At Scarab we love steel. This material has a long history in bike manufacturing and has been able to evolve into Modern Steel. It provides the perfect balance between ride quality, durability, and reasonable weight. Yes! Some of these are not the usual variables you measure the bike industry with… Ride Quality? You heard right!
Steel provides a unique feeling of the road. It smoothens out the harshness of the surface while transferring power in a unique slingshot-like way.

The material itself sounds humble, but don’t get us wrong: the steels we use are far from basic.

We use the most advanced steels available for bike manufacturing, allowing us to keep the bike package perfectly balanced. you riding more.

Navigating our Lineup

  • Introduction: The Importance of Tires in Cycling
Tires are essential for any bike, acting as the main contact with the terrain. Different cycling disciplines have been defined by their intended terrain—Track, Road, Gravel, Mountain. Recently, tire sizes have expanded within these disciplines, giving riders more options to tailor their bikes for specific terrains and preferences, which ultimately enhances their experience.

  • Scarab’s Philosophy on Product Lineup
At Scarab Cycles, our bikes are designed to span major cycling disciplines. We see the overlaps between models as a benefit, allowing one bike to be suitable for multiple uses. For instance, the Andes and Apüna models can perform across similar terrains but provide unique riding experiences due to their distinct features.

  • Tires as a Guide in Choosing Models
We believe in offering a range of tire options and have created a guide to help riders select the right bike for their terrain and riding style.

  • Bike Selection Process: Versatility and Terrain
Our process starts by identifying the primary terrain and tire size for the rider's main use, then expands to other intended uses. This Ideal Range approach helps riders select a model that can handle varied scenarios while excelling in its primary function.

  • Meaningful Conversations with Riders
We ask specific questions to understand each rider's goals, including their current bikes and limitations. This insight allows us to recommend a bike with the right tire range and features for each rider's unique needs, blending modern tire flexibility with the individuality of each frame.
